Dissolvable Frac Plug vs Bridge Plug

A practical comparison of overlapping plug terminology, configurations, and selection criteria for well completion and temporary zonal isolation.

Are Frac Plugs and Bridge Plugs the Same?

Both tools create a pressure barrier in casing, and a dissolvable frac plug is often treated as a specialized bridge-plug configuration. The terms are not fully interchangeable, however. Frac plug usually describes a tool designed for plug-and-perf stage isolation during hydraulic fracturing, while bridge plug is the broader term for a downhole barrier used for zonal isolation, pressure testing, cementing, workover, or temporary abandonment.

Dissolvable Frac Plug Application

A dissolvable frac plug is optimized for pump-down deployment and stage isolation in multistage stimulation. Common configurations use a ball dropped from surface or a ball installed with the plug. Pressure applied to the ball and ball seat isolates the completed interval below so the next stage can be perforated and fractured above the plug.

Dissolvable Bridge Plug Application

A dissolvable bridge plug is selected when the primary job is temporary wellbore or zonal isolation rather than repeated plug-and-perf staging. Depending on the design, it may provide isolation from one or both pressure directions and can support pressure testing, cementing, workover, and other temporary barrier requirements.

What Controls Dissolution?

Dissolution performance depends on magnesium-alloy formulation, protective coating, downhole temperature, fluid salinity, chloride concentration, pressure exposure, and the time between deployment and production. Product selection should therefore be based on the complete well environment rather than a headline dissolution time alone.

How to Specify a Plug

Provide casing size and weight, maximum differential pressure, bottomhole temperature, fluid composition and salinity, planned setting method, required isolation period, preferred ball configuration, and target time to full-bore recovery. These inputs allow the plug configuration and dissolution profile to be matched to the operation.
